• South African singer and songwriter Tyla speaks about her music, what she misses about SA and more in an interview.

• The singer is still on a high as she continues to make history, and her single, Water, continues to succeed internationally.

• She is also working on her debut album, set for release "very soon", featuring "more bangers".

As she continues to make history internationally, singer and songwriter Tyla is flying the South African flag high as she continues to live her dream in the United States.

Recently, Tyla's hit song Water made waves when it debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 67.

It is the first time in 55 years that a solo song by a South African made it onto the chart since Hugh Masekela's 1968 song Grazing in the Grass.

Water also entered Spotify's Global Top 50 playlist earlier in the month. It also amassed nearly 40 million streams on the platform.

In an interview with Apple Music's The Dotty Show, Tyla spoke about her song's success, being South African, her upcoming album and more.

"Since I could remember, I always saw myself on the biggest stages, like performing with the biggest people, huge crowds, like pop star vibes," she said. "So, that's always been the goal."

With hopes of following in the footsteps of Rihanna, who also comes from outside of America, it is no wonder the visuals of her hit song have been said to pay homage to the Barbadian singer.

"That's the goal," Tyla said.

On Water's success, Tyla said it was "exciting".

"I just love seeing the video. People tag me and seeing like Megan Thee Stallion use it, Christina Aguilera, Tinashe, all these crazy people that I look up to using my song, it doesn't feel real, and it's all happening all at once," she said.

The singer's international career kickstarted in 2021 when she signed with American label Epic Records through a venture with Johannesburg/New York-based Fax Records. Before then, she began as a mining engineering student, but realised her passion for music and committed to it full-time soon afterwards.

Having gained an international following, Tyla said there are things she can no longer do, including going to Gold Reef City. She said that she could also no longer be as indecisive as she always has been.

"I'm the type of person to just go to the shop wearing two different shoes, two different socks, a hoodie and messy hair – I'm that type of person, but I can't really do that anymore because every picture, you have to be on point," she said. "But, I mean, it's what comes with it."

Though she can't go to Gold Reef City any longer, Tyla admitted that being South African is still a "flex".

It's such a flex to be from South Africa, especially right now. South Africa has changed completely since amapiano sort of booming and doing what it's doing. The vibe in South Africa is completely different – everyone has a sense of pride in our country, and we are always bragging about it. We know we have that sauce; the parties in South Africa are crazy, and I'm just happy that I'm able to be one of the artists who pushes it more.

Gold Reef City might be a place she misses locally, but regardless of where she is, "seeing a guy's crack" is not something Tyla wants to see.

"No way. Like why is your crack showing? That's my biggest ick; I can't. It's just like, why can't you feel the breeze? Do you not know that your whole crack is out?" she said.

Tyla has no desire to see butt-cracks, but her supporters can look forward to her debut album, scheduled for release "very soon".

"I'm ready to show everyone, for real. Water is killing it, and I just want people to have more music out that's my sound and vibe so they can get to know me as an artist," she said. "I don't wanna just be a song, so I'm very excited."

The Johannesburger added that the album's cover, name and more are already sorted.

On what people can look forward to from the album, she said, "a fresh sound" and "more bangers".

The upcoming album will feature afro piano, pop, amapiano and afro beats.

"It's Africa to the world, for real, but also mixing it with my pop and R&B influence. I think it's going to be amazing, and I can't wait for everyone to hear," Tyla said.
